Stroke-N-Croak welcomes international competitor
Overcast skies, cool temperatures and a light fog obscuring Anvil Mountain were the backdrop to last Sunday’s running of the 41st annual Stroke-n-Croak Triathlon.
The event consists of a one mile-swim, an eight-mile bike course and a four-mile run.
It was a family affair as many teams featured family members competing in one or more of the legs. The Woehler family — Ruth, Thomas and Ryan — completed the event, with Lawrence counting the swimming laps.
Five Blandfords participated with Lexi Blandford swimming for four teams.
Four Pardees — Max, Noel, Ryder and Dan, filled out three teams.
And the Korenek-Johnson family team had the fastest time overall. Liz Korenek-Johnson swam, Talon Johnson biked and Tyler Johnson ran, all in a time of 1:22:24.
Of special note, Henrik Tördal, who had the fasted run time at 24 min 42 seconds, came all the way from Sweden to fill out the Sandra, Russel & Bradley Rowe team with Jesse Rowe counting laps. Jesse is recovering from a broken leg so he wasn’t able to do one of the actual “legs”— pun intended. Coincidentally, Henrik’s brother, Patrick Tördal, happens to live in Nome so Henrik got the added benefit of a visit with this brother’s family after the race. Team Rowe/Tördal finished in a time of 1:28:44.
Melissa Stewart provided the swimming and teamed up with both Garrick Fuller and Tracey Gregg.
Longtime Stroke-N-Croak organizer Kirsten Bey had help with logistics from Diana Adams and Bob Lewis, who made sure all the bikers made the turn at the Rec Center and who also provided cookies to finishers at the finish line.
Bey thanked everyone who participated and helped.
