Claudia Jeanne Straub Doyle

Oct. 19, 1943 ~ Oct. 24, 2020

Claudia Jeanne Straub Doyle was born in Nome on Oct. 19, 1943 and passed away on Oct. 24, 2020 in Springfield, Oregon from an acute lung infection.

Claudi was the first born of Elmer and Mildred Straub. Claudi attended grade school in Nome, first three years of high school at Holy Names Academy in Seattle and graduated from Nome High School Class of 1961. She worked as a switch board operator for Nome Telephone and at the Nome Drug Store while in high school.

After high school, Claudi married Air Force member Homer White.  They had one son, Homer, born in 1962. They were stationed in Texas and in Japan for four years.

Claudi returned to Nome in 1970 and married Doug Doyle on July 17, 1971. She worked at the Nome Pharmacy, General Telephone, was Election Supervisor for the Alaska Division of Elections, ending her working career running the billing department for the Nome Joint Utilities System.

With Doug, they started Nome Machine Works in 1983.  After Doug retired in January 2001, they spent their winters in Brookings, Oregon and summers at their home in Council and spent the winter of 2010/2011 there.  They drove back and forth between Brookings, Fairbanks and Anchorage every year except for one, the last few years in their RV, which was very enjoyable.

Claudi was an Extra Class Ham radio operator, call sign KL0HI.  She belonged to the Seward Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, Ragchew Amateur Magic Club, Pelican Bay Amateur Radio Club, and MINOWS Ladies Amateur Club.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 19 and the Pioneers of Alaska Igloo #1.  Claudia was the catcher for the Bering Sea Stray Cats of the Nome Softball League.  For more than 25 years Claudi made the wreaths and crosses for Nome Memorial Day Parade Celebration.
